TerraGenesis
Hello everybody and welcome back to JoeBro's GameShow!
Before we get started I wanted to say thank you again for coming to my blog!
Before we get started I wanted to say thank you again for coming to my blog!
The game this week is out of this world! In fact, it's even out of our whole solar system!
This week's game review is on the game, "TerraGenesis".
This week's game review is on the game, "TerraGenesis".
If you're looking to rule over a world like a God/Goddess, that bends to your whim, then
TerraGenesis is the game for you!
TerraGenesis is the product of Edgeworks Entertainment, and is lead by Alexander Winn.
Along with his team they have created an amazing game and I would like to personally thank
them for creating this amazing game. From the graphics, to the science, and just the overall
ambiance of the whole game; I am so proud that I can share this game with all of you!
TerraGenesis is building game, not too far from something like Civ or Sims, but where it
differs is that the building is on a planetary scale. You have to build structures in order for
your humans to live in and while doing that you have to build other structures to help make
the planet similar to Earth.
You start out in our solar system with the ability to colonize the first four planets (plus the
moon). Each planet has a different difficulty, and each planet is represented like they should
be. Mercury is incredibly hot; Venus' pressure level is off the charts, and so on and so forth.
What about this game makes it so great?
Another thing about this game that captured my attention was the music. It sounds like a
space adventure is waiting to happen, and you're the person waiting to blast off. The music
doesn't distract from the game which I find is a small but very well needed feature.
I feel whenever I play this game that the music invigorates my play time. The music
uses long notes and doesn't swell or dip to fast. It's meant to keep pace with the game
and personally it evokes a sense of wonder and mystery.
The music is harder to explain, and it's better if listened to (obviously), but the best
way to describe it would be music that isolates you from everything else.
What is this game about?
TerraGenesis, like I said is a building game. When you start off you're given a free colony with about 100 humans in a Hab Unit. Hab Units store your humans safely until the planet can support them.
While the Hab Unit protects the humans, it's a long way from what you would call a home. That's why it's up to you, the player, to make the planet you're on habitable. You're given seven traits, five which affect your planet directly. They are: TEMPERATURE, PRESSURE, OXYGEN, WATER, and BIOMASS.
The only way to combat the barren planet your humans live on is to build structures that create the five main traits. In order to research them, you have to build mines on the planet and collect resources. Each one gives a certain amount of money and they last for a few days.
After obtaining all that you can focus on the main point of the game: colonizing that planet. In order to achieve full colonization, you have to collect what are called Culture Points. These can generate randomly from your colonies or you obtain them when your population reaches a certain amount.
There has to be one thing you don’t like about the game?
While there's not much I dislike about the game itself, when I first started playing I played it
on my iPhone 7 and then I upgraded to the X. When I played it on the X, the game
never filled my whole screen (since my whole phone is a screen), so I had some black edges.
When they released the game for Android they updated iOS as well, but what happened was
that the little buttons to return to your main page, and the page to see your trait levels, got
shoved in the corner and you have to tap them a few times for it to register your tap.
Another complaint I have about the game was, not too long ago, there was a bug
that would make your colonists disappear from their colony, which I found very amusing at
the time. They've since fixed that but I actually loved it! One, because it was hilarious
to see everyone just up and left; and two, because it added another layer of hardship
to a game that was already difficult enough.
Why play this game over another?
Well first: there's no other game like this one. TerraGenesis is in a class of it's own. From
the music to the graphics, to the actual game play; it's a timeless game to play. When you're playing the game you loose sense of time, and you get invested in your little worlds.
A few highlights of the game is that even though you don't interact directly with the humans, they still find a way to make life interesting. For example, some humans can become a prodigy and upgrade one of your facilities to level 10, where your normal way of upgrading only bring it to level 5. There's also things like people reportedly seeing things outside of their Hab Unit, or a mine may hit a huge vein of the ore and it take about a week to deplete. Each little blurb that shows up on the screen affects your world and it helps the game from becoming stagnant.
One final thing about this game is that it is slow when you play it, but TerraGenesis isn't meant to played like The Room, or Pokemon GO. It's a game that takes time to develop. Most of the things in the game take time to build/research/grow which means you have time to finish that essay for class, or talk to a friend. And the best part is that the game is always playing; even when you close the app. This can get tricky if you forget about it, so make sure your notifications are on!
JoeBro’s Rating:
We’ve finally reached that point in the post where I get to tear the game apart;
with love of course! While I do truly love this game, I’m not timid about saying what
I really think about a game.
